Mission and Goals
The mission of Sister Cities Essex Haiti is to build a mutual long-term sustainable relationship between the people of Essex, Connecticut, USA and the people of Deschapelles, Haiti, their extended communities, and Hospital Albert Schweitzer located in Deschapelles.
Sister Cities Essex Haiti works to build cooperation between the people of these communities, enabling them to learn, work and solve problems together by collaborating with ODES, volunteer partners and with HAS through an exchange of educational, cultural, professional, municipal, business, and technical initiatives and projects.

Our strategic goals are:
1: To develop and sustain the infrastructure of Sister Cities Essex Haiti.
2: To educate and develop broad support in Connecticut.
3: To educate and develop broad support in Deschapelles.
4: To build sustainable relationships among entities in both communities.
5: To collaboratively identify, implement and sustain projects.
6: To raise funds for Sister Cities Essex Haiti, Hospital Albert Schweitzer, and projects.
7: To keep Hospital Albert Schweitzer and Organization pour Development, Economique et Social (“ODES”) apprised of activities.
Sister Cities Essex Haiti supports the mission of Hospital Albert Schweitzer which is “to collaborate with the people of the Artibonite Valley as they strive to improve their health and quality of life.”
The mission of ODES is the promotion of agriculture, the stimulation of the economy, and the improvement and enhancement of education, culture, and the environment.
The missions of Sister Cities Essex Haiti, HAS and ODES supports the United Nations Millennium Development Goals to:
Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger- Achieve universal primary education
- Promote gender equality and empower women
- Reduce child mortality
- Improve maternal health
- Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
- Ensure environmental sustainability
- Develop a global partnership and development

Hospital Albert Schweitzer provides services that address goals 1, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. It is envisioned that Sister Cities Essex Haiti and ODES can provide the foundation to address goals 2, 3, 7 and 8. Thereby, all of the UN Millennium Development Goals could be addressed in the Deschapelles area by a collaboration between Sister Cities Essex Haiti, HAS and ODES.
